I think it's that some clients start new users off with some suggested follows, so literally every person that creates a key using that app ends up following those people. I don't think they are bots, but a lot are probably inactive.

Nostr works on the principle of how much energy you put into it, you get the same amount in return. You regularly engage with people, whereas some of the public figures and bigger accounts, rarely engage at all, not naming names. So it's too be expected. That's why follower accounts mean nothing and it's a vanity metric.

The real #nostrfamous people like you make an effort to talk to people and actively engage on a regular basis no matter how big or small their account is.
