Probably because at that point it was clear what people were going to use bitcoin for.
Satoshi understood fiat extremely well. Best bet was to disappear. He probably got regularly got pinged by NSA types and/or people who worked on and off with them.

Short story: Incident called "Cablegate". Assange dumped US diplomatic cables. Legacy money shut out Wikileaks. He entertained bitcoin, Satoshi said no because it would draw regulators/governments at bitcoin.

Bitcoin was extremely vulnerable in the early days so Satoshi didn't want too much government attention focused on it, wanted it to grow slowly and organically in the background until it became too powerful to stop, which is basically where we are today.
