There should be no need for unions in a market with ample competition. Unions are not inherently bad, but they are a symptom of a bigger problem. That problem is a lack of marketplace competition. Then Unions hold too much power over a particular market segment. (See teachers union, now our public education suffers) The solution is actually increasing competition by cutting unnecessary regulation and barriers to entry for new market actors and breaking up monopolies. Government has a monopoly on healthcare and education. Unions ensue.
