When you were a kid, do you remember the book fair?

Our kids’ school book fair is around the corner, and I love the idea of teaching our kids to read more.

But here’s my problem: they’ve introduced this e-wallet system where you load money for your child, and they’re not even allowing cash anymore. I used to prefer paying with cash, it taught my kids how much they are spending, how much they got back, not spending everything all at once, but now we’re being forced into using this e-wallet. If your child doesn’t spend it all, you don’t get a refund. Instead, you get an e-gift card for Scholastic books online. I don’t buy books directly from Scholastic because I can get the same books for a lot cheaper on Amazon! I also hate being forced to buy from them when I don’t want to.

Now here’s my dilemma… would you load the e-wallet and let your kids pick out books at the fair, or show them how to save by buying the books on Amazon instead?

wow. i would not be impressed with this. however, i also wouldn't take away the opportunity from my kids to participate in the book fair. if we gave our kids $20 to spend at the book fair. they always spend all of the money. they never brought any money home anyways.

We teach our kids not to spend all their money so they can learn the value of it. They usually have fun with it and are proud that they got 2-3 things and still brought money back. I just hate that I’m being forced to possibly have money left in an account I’ll never use again since I don’t buy books from them. It feels like throwing away money because if any is left over, it’ll be too little to order anything online, forcing you to spend more with them.
