An idea!💡 What if nostr build started adding a watermark (Powered by Nostr & Bitcoin) to all free uploads? Will that help with Nostr adoption? Will people object? It will not add anything to Nostr.build, but extra computation and coding time. Thoughts? This is coming from one more posted sometime ago, so not my idea. 🐶🐾🫡

You guys have the final decision obviously, it would increase paid subscriptions obviously and that's needed too. I wouldn't object, that being said I might use my own server for uploads then.

my 2 sats: as someone with an extensive marketing background i am not a fan of this ldea. it's a form of passive promotion for sure, but the "the service" should be slick. people associate watermarks with jankey free "non open source" media services. imo a non insignificant amount of people will start using another place to upload media.

I agree with the comments about not forcing a watermark on all images but maybe some fun Nostr themed watermarks or borders etc that people could chose to add to images might make sense for Nostr promotion?

How do you pay for all the storage and bandwidth? People should pay for the service and cover your costs. It's just business. Along those lines, what's the incentive for me to renew if I get basically the same thing for free?
I think a basic repository with no folders, etc. might be a good middle ground. Something less complex that will get some sats inflow while reducing the cost of entry for the plebs.
All that said, I have sent image links to 2 non-Nostr people who immediately decided to start using the service. They saw the domain and that was enough to get them interested. However, they are just freeloading and have no care about Nostr whatsoever.
As I'm sitting here with nostr:npub1hgvtv4zn2l8l3ef34n87r4sf5s00xq3lhgr3mvwt7kn8gjxpjprqc89jnv talking about this, it occurs to me that pay-per-upload would be an interesting approach, also. Big files would be self-regulating. nostr:npub1ua6fxn9ktc4jncanf79jzvklgjftcdrt5etverwzzg0lgpmg3hsq2gh6v6 kind of does this. If you play a long song, it costs more.
Good point, but we need some free tier to get at least basic pics onto nostr. As for pay per upload, can be done but requires time to implement it and have no idea if it will pay for itself. Remember, the most expensive part of the service is human labor, and at the current levels there is no way it will be able to pay for that. It is fine short term to gain some users and features. Hope that sort of answers some of your questions 🐶🐾🫡
I agree, a free tier is needed to get started. And you're right about a watermark being intrusive for that service, also. I just worry that so many of the things we enjoy will become unsustainable. People have to get used to the idea of paying if they don't want to eventually become the product.
It's interesting as a user to get perspective on these things. The ongoing human costs aren't as obvious as operating costs like hosting. Someone should do a "day in the life of a FOSS service" documentary...
Yes! Underlying cost of infra includes human costs of the infra provider, but the cost of the labor that makes use of that infra is rarely considered short term. Obviously if things and user base scales, it will be able to cover labor, otherwise it’s mostly a child of love and passion 🐶🐾🫂🤣
