Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain, which is secured by more work than anything else. The blockchain is shared redundantly on thousands of computers around the world, and updated — 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 — approximately every 10 minutes.

Transactions on the Bitcoin network are 𝘱𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘺𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘴, providing a level of privacy that traditional banking systems often lack. While all on-chain transactions are verifiable and visible to everyone, the identities and purposes for those transactions are not.

Bitcoin’s supply is limited to 21 million coins, and 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. As more people learn about what Bitcoin can do for them, demand for it rises, but the supply stays the same, making its exchange rate increase.
