I started down this path but got discouraged. I was able to get Bitcoin Core running (not confirming) and synched, but I started reading that it was complicated to get it fully running from behind a VPN. That's a must for me.

If there are any good tutorials on how to set that up on a local machine, that would be awesome. I don't see VPSs as self-sovereignty.
