The jumbled letters are their npub which is the real unique identity. The npub gets replaced with the chosen “name” once you click on them and your client reads their profile to fill in the information. I think it happens to avoid reading every profile to only the profiles you want to see. I notice it only on new people I haven’t interacted with. There might be a better explanation but based on what I think is going on this is what I believe.
