Apparently the Soviets were able to grow citrus in sub zero temperatures by building trenches. Makes me really want to start a citrus farm in Idaho.

What’s that place that grows oranges underground?

Nice this is awesome. Not the one I was thinking about.

Mine was the exact opposite lol

Nice read, thanks

A more modern version of this is a walipni

I had thought walipinis were less useful at high latitudes, but trenches like this would be even less so… interesting it worked for them.

That is common in the Andes as well, for all kinds of plants that cannot deal with the altitude and climate

Have fun digging those holes/trenches.

I always do

Oh my. So you have dug trenchs deep enough to plant 10, 15, 20 foot tall trees. Amazing 🀩

Lol no, just some drainage trenches here and there

>”This method cannot be applied to any plant. Citrus plants tolerate very low light levels for 3-4 months per year, provided that the temperature of the air in contact with the crown is maintained between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius.”

They cover trenches with boards and let the snow stay on top!! #neverknew
