A dedicated person could work on keeping older bitcoin versions compiling to newer systems and/or VMs

There is probably funding available for a structured project

One of bitcoin's super powers is backward compatibility, which is only as good as how many version back you can still run

It would also be nice to have easy access to bug fixes for older releases!

Github actions does allow something like this. One could have multiple versions of systems/vms installed and compile to those on a local machine too.

GA allows something like this. Ive done it both locally and there.

Great idea, but thinking it should be as automated as possible.

Dibs!

pretty hilarious y'all worship the c++ bitcoin and it cannot compile on the current version.

Original release of btcd compiles with almost no changes. Rob Pike wrote an article called "The Ten Year Challenge" all about this exact subject. Shame nobody pays attention.
