Are hashtags really useful? #asknostr

Why not use communities instead of cluttering the post text with hashtags?

Personally, I've found reddit style communities more useful for discovery and niche topic discussion than randomly searching for hashtags on twitter or even nostr.

This answer is uttered by someone who actually never used social media regularly & committedly, until now as #NostrOnly.

I wasn't used to this style of connecting with people, so I expressed quite a few posts with using this technique, to familiarise myself with it.

One cool thing I found out doing that, is that it is so extremely easy to connect with people outside of your usual circle of peers, once you start using general hashtags, like #askNostr, for example.

For "communities" you have to join them & if they have custom names, you also have to find them first.

The hurdle is much bigger. While using a hashtag is so damn simple & quick.

That said, the issue to me with cluttering text is not i line hashtags, where they naturally make sense, but all those attention seeking npubs, who append like 30 hashtags to the end of their note. This is unnecessary & I would recommend against doing that.

However, inline #Hashtag s make sense to me, now.

Nostr is one big community.. closing off to communities is like a step back to the old ways.. because I can't join ever community because I'm sure I'll get kicked out from a few haha soooo we use hashtags šŸ˜… tgis isn't reddit or bluesky or Twitter THIS IS #NOSTR šŸ˜…

I'm #Amethyst you can subscribe to some hashtags.

You even can check witch hashtag a user is following in its profile.

I find it quite useful, tbh.

🤦

I’m really looking forward to seeing communities implemented in most clients. Just like twitter this free flow of posts with at most tags as a way to stay on topic is a mess.
