I have always preferred pencil floats. Weighted until the float almost sinks by itself. Reduce that friction.

Fishing for what most consider bait fish here. Table fish for us. This is a telescopic pole by the way. No reel. Very rarely see anyone fish with them these days. Was far more popular with the oldies (especially Greeks) 20 years ago.

Bait is about 8ft under. 6lb fluorocarbon leader. Size 12 hook. No weight near bait as I like a bait that sinks more naturally. Actually using a heavy ballbearing swivel just under the float as the weight here.

Burleying every ~30 seconds with about half a teaspoon of breadcrumbs and a squirt of tuna oil for flavour. Good way to get a feed in many parts. #fishing #fish #hunting #hunt #sendit

Float Frens. (Or are they Lovers?)

It's been ages, may be a decade since last time I went fishing. Love that pencil float, I never saw that before. How do you hold it?

Those are mullets, right? They're not really appreciated where I live (spanish north coast) but I remember when I was a child there was an old guy known as "El corconero"(corcon is the local name for that fish) ... he was almost every day catching loads of them on the same brigde and he had just a long bamboo without reel, a big pot of smelly paste and a very small hook. And a huge basket for the fishes!

People used to say he was selling them in France which is less than an hour drive from here and I think they're more popular there 🤔

So interesting! Thanks for sharing. 🥰 El Corconero is an inspiring name and story. Haha. I have been the lucky man with the most fish a number of times, using this technique. Actually, if I needed food/protein/EPA&DHA desperately (we all do lol), I would always deploy this technique as it is so fruitful.

So the pencil float basically just sits there at the surface of the water, and when you get a good bite, it shoots under the water, then all you do is lift the pole and fight the fish if you hook it.

Mullet are definitely one of the fish you can catch here using this technique. Auntie SWIM and I actually adore eating mullet. They tend to only want to eat dough or bread, on small hooks.

Most white fellas where I'm from do not eat mullet. Black fellas don't either. They don't even care. They might use them for crab or shark bait or something. However, there are always smart Vietnamese groups/families targeting them all through winter especially here. Often in the middle of the city, they will find them wherever they are!

The Greeks here will use this technique, but not for a peasant's mullet. They chase garfish (they call them Sargana, a name I love.) Only difference is the bait—they use little "glass fish" which are tiny translucent bait fish that Sargana love.

The pole itself you just hold like any rod, the larger ones are just a little differently cumbersome. 🥰

Holy shit my lack of English knowledge makes me look dumb sometimes lol, I just thought you were using a real wood pencil as float but I've just noticed that's how those very narrow floats are called 🙃

You did not look dumb at all! And you could totally use a real pencil if that is what is around. Haha. 🥰
