they have already came back in china, with those 15-min cities walled districts.
but they control the people in, instead of keeping the barbarians out.
omnipresent surveillance is a virtual wall too
mostly to control and fine the subjects... while the barbarians get 'privacy' or 'tech problems on that day'

Walled cities where fortresses for the protection of their people. Not open air prisons.
