It’s an ethanol extraction followed by a water extraction, then mixed together into a full spectrum 50/50 tincture that contains all of the water soluble and ethanol soluble compounds. Many of these compounds are soluble in either water or ethanol, but not both, so a dual extract tincture is the only way to get all of them. The ethanol also gives the tincture shelf stability.

Do you do these extractions on the same sample, or do you have a sample for the ethanol, and another for the water? Lastly, does the sequence matter?

Sorry, I didn’t see this question until just now! The extractions are done on the same sample, ethanol first followed by water. People do it both ways, but I think it’s better to do the ethanol first. Water can potentially oxidize and degrade some of the ethanol soluble compounds if you use water first.
