Completed the first phase of the next timber framing project this weekend. Adding a bench to the mudroom section. Matching the shelf from earlier. The joinery on this build was significantly easier than the shelf (the diagonal brace on the shelf is one of the more complex joints to figure out in timber framing... No idea why I started with that).

These are the majority of the tools used for building the frame.

I feel I've become much better getting more accurate cuts with the handsaw and laying out my cut lines. This reduces the amount of work required with the chisel. The wood is very far from square or straight, but it's just a bench 🀷

Hogging out the open faced, crossing mortises on top of the legs is by far the hardest part of this build. Encountering cedar knots is a very unpleasant experience and slows the process considerably. Paying attention to grain direction is critical to avoid split outs. I had a few on this project as you can see, but once the bench top is installed most flaws should be well hidden.

The completed post just looks really cool.

Adding the first layer of the crossing tenons starts to bring the joinery to reality.

Had to pound in the cross pieces to join the two sets of legs completes the joint and really tightens up the whole frame.

The final dimensions are 24"x50"x18" for the frame with a 2" top yet to come. I'll likely end up lower the posts to account for the thick top plus leveling for the floor.

I really love this kind of stuff!

Awesome work, and excellent note structure. It helps educate me on the topic.

This is what I think nostr needs to grow, so this is what I provide. I'm bored with the Bitcoin echo chamber that is present here. That will not attract those who don't yet know Bitcoin.

Agreed. Share the things we know. Build communities people want to be a part of.

Now THAT"S proof of work!!

Awesome work bro! I did my first real woodworking prohect this summer and built a camping sleep platform and pull out shelf in the back of our pickuo truck! It was super humbling, cant imagine how hard hand joinery must be. Finally, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you should put a platform on your bench otherwise ppl will just fall through when they try to sit down 🀣

LoL yeah, I think I mentioned that in the note. The bench top is next, just gotta figure out how I wanna do it. Would like to do it without any hardware if I can devise a way to do that. πŸ€” It'll be a while til I get to it unfortunately.

Sweet! Looking forward to seeing the finished product, followed!

So cool. We made our bed using similar joints. What's the purple stuff?

I assume you're referring to the wood? It's eastern red cedar. The heartwood turns purple-ish.

Wow hahπŸ”₯. Without zooming in it looked like putty or something.

This is awesome, I like the tools you use.

Very nice!

Followed!

Hand tools are the tools of the future!

Yes indeed. What height did you decide on for your workbench?

Wait. I just reread your post. It's not a workbench right? πŸ˜…

Correct. It's a bench to sit down and change our shoes 😁 I've called it a work bench a time or two myself.
