At this particular location, the owners are Canadian — but more and more, I’m seeing an overwhelming number of businesses owned by foreigners instead of Canadians.
Why? Because most Canadians aren’t willing to take on millions in debt just to own a business that forces them to work 7 days a week, all day, just to survive. Foreigners, on the other hand, are often willing to take that risk — and as a result, they’re buying up the businesses.
Many of them avoid hiring Canadians, too. Canadians are more likely to speak up when they see something unsafe or unfair. Foreign workers, often in more vulnerable positions, stay quiet and accept lower wages.
It’s a big mess in Canada — and it’s only getting worse.
