How would one go about estimating the fees for a given on chain transaction?
I know how to tell what fee rates are at, but how can I tell how many inputs my transaction will be made up of?

I just payed 19 cuck bucks to move 150... I estimated it to be much lower and I was wrong.
You can use mempool to see how many inputs you will be consolidating with your address. Then you can then multiply those inputs by the current fees being excepted by miners also being shown on mempool.
Do you have a wallet that allows you to choose your inputs so you can minimise le fees? Also known as coin control? Sparrow is a great wallet for this on the lappy/desky (very visually clear too) and Nunchuck I also like for this coin control on le phone. Choosing your biggest UTXOs/coins as the inputs certainly helps. :-)
