For many people, religious teachings and the institution of religion is an incredible tool to move them towards higher states without having to work it all out for themselves.

Religion when viewed as a tool makes a lot more sense. Some people misuse it. History has show that it can become deeply corrupted. I would agrue many of them are corrupt today and have lost their way. They no longer focus on truth and instead play into tribal disagreements and cultural debates. Finding a good church can be hard.

But criticising the tool is not the same as criticising the underlying truth. The underlying truth cannot be corrupted or changed. If Christianity (as an institution) doesn't express that for you, don't use it. But you can still follow God, and it is incredibly necessary that you do in some form.
