I'm convinced people just load the washer and dryer in a hectic manner and accidentally drop socks behind or to the sides of the machines. It used to happen to my mom so often she swore there was a poltergeist in the house but at one point she had the machines replaced and found mountains of missing clothes that she was too chaotic to notice 🤷‍♀️
