Users hate picking relays not only because it is hard and there is no info out there, but because it is seen as choosing their masters. No one likes to make themselves subject to the whims of a third party. Especially here.

I have no issues picking relays. It’ll be nice to see the differences but I have no idea how to do it. There needs to be more info out there.

I don’t mind relay shopping

Is there a way to create an initial bootstrap that is replaced as soon as they pick a few people to follow, a notice pops up to say "Select relays based on where your friends post" this replaces the bootstrap and they see them more as the message board locations their friends post to.

Does that sound feasible?

Perhaps relays should, by default, be chosen at random from an ever-changing list of active relays, and rotated frequently.

Perhaps this list could be obtained from and stored via DHT.

most of us probably stick with the default relays that come with initial client setup

this creates centralization around both clients and their owned relays. would be nice to have something like a relays directory (similar to nostrapps).

Yep. Default settings are extremely centralizing

the phrase ‘Smart Clients & Dumb Servers’ is probably reflected in the current UX/UI Design of Nostr apps

Relays are 3rd class. Users rotate them around like clearing browser cookies 🍪

How about pick 10 at random every time the app opens

Anything more than 3 is a massive battery drain/data usage. Choose good relays, you won't need 10 and you battery will last 2 days.

Maybe 1 random selected by the app (with a good score) and the other 2 hand picked as way of avoiding centralization

The problem I see with relay picking, especially with the outbox model is not only do you have to pick a relay, you have to pick many different relays for different not so obvious categories. On top of all that some clients publish the relays and sometimes they don't. So I never really know which relays are being used or even why. It's well beyond most normies to figure out.

Yep

More relays on Umbrel and Start9 may help, not all of us can handle a server.

That is still a thing that is opaque to me
