Part 1 of my #AmericanRevolution #vexillology series: Bennington

Named for the Battle of Bennington, where it was first flown, the β€œBennington flag” has 13 stars and 13 stripes, symbolic of the 13 American colonies that were in active rebellion against Great Britain. This revolutionary flag is widely recognized by it’s large '76' in the canton, representing the year 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Another prominent feature of the Bennington flag, one which makes it one of my personal favorites, is the arrangement of the 13 stripes, with white being outermost, rather than red being outermost as in most US flags. Also, its stars have 7 points each (instead of the standard 5) and the blue canton is larger than a standard canton, spanning 9 instead of 7 of the 13 stripes.

That’s interesting! The stars kind of look like a ☹️ face. Do you by chance know why the 7 points instead of the 5?

I couldnt find any information on that. My guess is that it was just a personal preference of whoever designed the flag. All flags from this era where hand sewn and had various types of stars. For example, the flag flown at George Washington's headquarters, had 6-pointed stars.

Thank you for looking into it!!!!! If I were to design it I’d make the stars a smile face shape heheh πŸ™‚ I think the 7 points looks cool!

Yea I would have put them in a circle around the 76, similar to Betsy Ross' design, but πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ My fav thing about this one is that with the white as base of the field instead of red, it's counter to what you are used to seeing

Yeah!!! True! Very unique. Vexillology or however you spell it is neat!!
