We have this old pear tree that came with the house. 1st 2 years we lived here there were pears, last 9 years ver few pears. I had given up on it. Didn’t even bother checking in on it it was so barren. Walked by it the other day & saw this

Anyone have suggestions for what to do with pears?

My wife makes pear butter out of our pears.

Ooh.. that’s something I hadn’t thought of

Is it a sand pear? No clue what to do with that many. Give a bunch away. Fruit cocktail is what kind grandparents did with excess fruit they grew

My husband wants to throw them in a heap to feed to deer. So essentially to use the pears as a deer harvest.

I mean a protein tree is pretty awesome lol

We have a bunch of pigs where I am that would be coming in

The neighbor has been seeing the bucks hang out below the tree. We had a storm this week that knocked a bunch of fruit down from everything. I’ve noticed several deer tracks around

deer season is right around the corner. In Fl if you have a farm you can hunt them year round as nuisance animals.

What’s their definition of a farm for year round hunting purposes?

My bow season is 4 months long in OH it starts at the end of Sept. I already have a week off work scheduled, got my main blind set up for early season, hubs got me a backup blind for gun season in case I miss in bow. I so excited for this years season for some reason

Not sure of hand. A buddy of mine has ag land for a tree farm and can harvest year round. I'll have to look it up brb

Seems pretty vague and looks like you have to pay the crown a little bit more money

Yep, there’s always gotta be some hoop to jump though

Where are you located?

I make apple butter. Maybe pear butter?

Ohio

treat them like apples. they can well, so preserve as many as you can. pear cobbler with vanilla ice cream is one of my favorites. if they not sweet, brown sugar helps. another is pears, bananas, bourbon, butter. saute. then flame it. side of vanilla ice cream again. fabulous.

That would be a lot of ice cream to eat, but I am up to the challenge!

You can can them in jars with a slice of pineapple. Yummy!

Mmmm pears & pineapple

I love dehydrated pears.

Dehydrated pears - I’ll have to look into that

If they’re really hard, bake them in the oven with butter, fresh ginger slices, spices, and sugar. This is what I did with my inedibly hard pears and it was delicious!

I think it’d be fun to steep pears in alcohol to make a liqueur.

Make a pear tart with a layer of almond paste or marzipan underneath

Stewed in wine with spices

Buttered spaetzle with paprika and sliced pears as a side dish

OMG - I can’t wait until they’re ready now!

I wonder if the inconsistency is related to the connection between weather and flowering?

If there’s frosts after they bud, they could lose a lot of flowers. And related plants like apples rely on a certain length of time of cold weather to produce flower buds.

It might be possible to predict when you’ll have a good crop of pears.

Agreed, I was starting to that that some local dummy planted some non fruit producing flowering pear trees, it was just an old tree & past it’s prime or maybe it had some weird pear disease that wasn’t showing yet. This has flowered gloriously a few years - with no crop, so this year when it flowered gloriously I just wrote it off as beautiful, but not productive. I was checking on my nut trees when I saw what it did
