That’s called a loss-leader and it’s been around forever. The problem is when people abuse it and the the added sales aren’t overcoming the loss. The right fucking thing to do that isn’t taught anymore by degenerate moochers is to reciprocate and just buy something from the business. If that had happened, Starbucks wouldn’t have had to adopt this policy.
They could also do things like improve their products, but I doubt that’s even possible with their current scale.
