Just like Ukraine giving away their nuclear weapons was a mistake

Legally and technically Ukraine never owned nuclear weapons. They belonged to the Soviet Union and after the breakup they belonged to the successor, the Russian Federation.

Thanks, thus they were stationed in Ukrainian territory. Makes more sense now.

Absolutely. Of course the whole situation would have presented itself completely different if Ukraine had some nukes.
