It’s interesting to participate in the formation of a social media platform from such an early stage. On the one hand, I’d like a way to see significant posts since the last time I opened the app, rather than just the most recent. But that’s also the first step down the road to slavery to the algorithm like we see on every other platform atm.

The good thing about Nostr is that you’d be able to move between algorithms without losing your community, and I suppose in the end that’s the best we can do in any domain - preserve the right to vote with one’s feet.

Just not confident we’re actually able to evaluate the best thing for ourselves.

This 🟣 is NOT a platform.

This 🟣 is a PROTOCOL.

That’s why this 🟣 is and feels so different.

I meant platform in the general sense, but it is a good distinction

No I think that IS the distinction and for a journalist your goal should be to be as clear as possible.

And 🏃 this 🟠🟣 protocol greatly helps that.

Oh I’m no journalist, I just ask questions on Twitter Spaces. Maybe Nostr Nests someday.

But yes, clarity is next to godliness.

Experience is totally dictated by relays/clients.

It’s definitely possible to do algos right. Think what’s missing most is ability to turn them on or off, and get to build/choose what you want to use.

nostr enables all of that.

Few

Maybe on the client. I don’t want jannies censoring what I can see, “algo” or not.

Who’s Janice?

Jannies is a pejorative that refers to internet janitors. “Moderators”, typically undesirable beta males that want to impose their world view on others, and they do it for free.

TIL

Agree, I just wonder if I would actually choose the most beneficial one or just get trapped in the most short-term gratifying

This 💯

besides algos, your client’s addictive UX features could be turned on and off

I’m thinking it will also be the same with Reputation analysis… different services, relays or marketplaces may award you different scores depending on what they feel is valuable

Alternative services, relays, marketplaces may respect these scores or employ their own

There needn’t be a single best way to do anything… and yet everything could be chosen by the individual

While you can switch out relays or audit the code of your clients, it‘s not clear to me how you would even find out about a bad relay.

So lets take the responsibility of ordering events correctly:

Could‘t one relay simply deliberately take very long to hand out certain events? How would you notice?

Nostr is the first protocol protecting the digital integrity fundamental right.

Algos are ok as long as the individual can choose which algos to use and switch them off.

its possible to crowd source these algos

Nostr is growing at an incredible pace, but is still incredibly young. I believe that you’ll eventually be able to get this functionality when you want it, and still be able to switch to the more linear/chronological view at will. Maybe by using different apps, maybe within one app.

Confidence comes from day to day efforts. It takes time to build a skyscraper from a draft least you have general vision in mind, internal minor changes might be needed from time to time. Nothing is perfect but can always be better if you try!
