In a "fermenting for your garden" class I attended a few weekends ago, the instructor said that when plants are in the proper conditions (soil with the right microbes, and nutrients that are bioavailable to plants, etc), that the skin of the plants thickens and prevents pests from taking over. He said his garden has plenty of bugs, but no damage.

Also in Matt's book it says the knotweed helps trigger a systemic resistance. That's part of the reason for trying it out. Going to add some other things mentioned in it too to try and increase the effect.
