So what are the celebrations with Christmas originally about?

We're celebrating the rebirth of the sun, 3 days after the winter solstice.

The Sun of God is the light of the world.

In the new testament, Jesus is a metaphore of the sun. And those 3 days after the winter solstice are metaphorized as the 3 kings in the story. 😉
