Learn more about Costa Rica before #nostrica.

I present you or beloved "Agua dulce".

It translates literally as "sweet water". Though Costa Rica is famous for its coffee, agua dulce is the traditional breakfast drink of choice in many places.

This hot beverage is made by boiling water or heating milk and adding a piece of "tapa de dulce", which is made from a liquid extracted from sugarcane that has been heated and placed in a mold to harden. It is similar to a hardened chunk of brown sugar. This hard presentation is called "tapa"; however in modern times it is more common to purchase it as a powder to make preparation easier (like the one I just had, pictured)... it taste the same either way.

It smells like sweet heaven and will make you feel whole and loved when you drink it.

Personally I prefer the agua dulce with milk, and have it when visiting a cold place (near a mountain, a volcano or a cold cloud forest). It's warm and aroma is the best.

Muchísimas gracias por compartir cosas de la cultura tica! 😊🤙

Interesting! I’ve seen the hard cake form and wondered its proper usage?

Hi! That one, called "tapa de dulce" , used to be placed in a pot with hot water so it slowly "melts". Then you take some of that concentrate and dilute with boiling water it hot milk. It takes time and additional dishes to use this "tapa", that's why nowadays the powder form is a lot more used for practicality. Thanks for your interest and question ☺️

I’ve seen the cakes on tables and wondered… thank you for taking the time to explain.
