Is it weird that the only social media I use, I interact with people I’ve never met, and most are anon.

Whereas I never use my Facebook. I know all my connections there. In real life. We all have connected together for one time or another. Family/friends/classmates.

Is there something special about the connections with strangers online vs with those I knew/know personally?

Read the strength of weak ties. A great paper.

My PhD thesis (incomplete) was based around applying its concepts to financial markets.
