I agree - there is no right or wrong. Those two scenarios indeed seem to how we should assess our priorities. Also - what could governments even feasibly do against millions of people holding bitcoin that is inherently unconfiscatable? They know you have it, but can't take it. 🤔

Green tax on bitcoin holdings... They know you had it at some point. Itd be a tough spot. Suddenly you're a criminal and much of the public would be on side.

if they ever did this would seriously consider leaving the country. not just bc of the tax implications but also bc of the authoritarian implications.

Oh they can absolutely take it. If someone knows where you live and knows you own bitcoin, what’s to stop them from breaking in and torturing you until you give them access to your privatekey? The asymmetric cryptography makes it unconfiscatable as long as you can keep your privatekey a secret. The “$5 wrench attack” has happened so many times that Lopp has a overview of all known physical attacks on bitcoiners:

Funny side note: I had an argument with a random account on Twitter a while back where he insisted that this was no problem for him because he knew Jiu-jitsu (or something similar) so he could just beat up any cop that tried to take his sats😂 I wish I could find that thread for you guys but it’s #NostrNovember so no can do.

what happened to that Loaded character is scary. gov just threw him in a cell till he gave them the key.

I guess humans will do whatever it takes...
