No Amethyst is not doing anything but rendering the title. Even the backtick'ed characters aren't styled, and that's markdown syntax also.

Yes, because NIP-54 defines Markdown for wiki pages. And thus, Amethyst uses Markdown (but missed wikilinks implementation).
