I love the Pretzel Logic - Katy Lied period. Royal Scam is interesting because it’s transitional to the Aja - Gaucho material.

Interesting, though - I'd actually put Royal Scam closer to Pretzel Logic and Katy Lied than Aja...or maybe as a "rock" intermission between the jazzier Katy Lied and Aja.
I would agree. The guitar centric tunes on Royal Scam lean a bit closer to Katy Lied. But, to me, there’s a certain polish that foreshadows Aja.
Might just be hindsight. You’re right. They are all grade A albums. I wouldn’t say Aja is my favorite, but I would say it’s a perfect album.
