Lush - Spooky

I'm a sucker for loud guitars, melodic playing and harmonies, and Lush has that in spades. Of course, the British press hated them when this came out, because *who the hell knows*.

But it's a defining album of '92, and the best of their all-too-brief career.

A re-release this year and a remastering; I haven't yet compared it to my early copy, but I wanted to send the band a couple of bucks, so...

nostr:npub1c8l4ktytwfq9p74mp8yjqr3d8ec8q32ngj8qgwn2v9n2yd5n83tsxjsldj Yeah, I saw that. I'm not sure they compressed the dynamics that much, but I have to pull out my original.

Lyle Mays - Lyle Mays

A few years after “…as falls Wichita…”, Mays released this solo album, which is definitely a continuation of the approach to both composition and playing on that album.

Bill Frisell plays the Metheny role here, and we’ve got Nana Vasconcelos from before.

Quite enjoyable...another good find in the 'bins.

nostr:npub1qw54rqswdc57yswxwst3n7dcsv2ssg3rjr5zevx62p9aqxn8k8mqjm037m It's interesting - despite the fact that it's as "overworked" as Gaucho, and Wendell is used on some tracks, it's got a sweetness to it that counteracts the preciseness and softens it a bit, which has always worked for me.

nostr:npub1fq5n4rmpw4utt792v8fhv4cp8rmg79fyqlcdws9kxeaq5pkjwcysaep8du Is there a shirt pocket /superduper “official” account to follow for updates and posts around the software and development?

nostr:npub1nk6ekeeu8qkd5jv374axsznquapau5lxfs5cm2jn00yg8qttrvgszx44wv I've never created a separate SuperDuper account, and announce things here (and also at the blog),

Caroline Rose - The Art of Forgetting

No Superstar, this: it's a breakup album, both with their partner, dealing with the death of a grandmother… it's the artier side of The Beth's “Expert in a Dying Field” - less playful, but equally sad.

Rose plays almost everything here, and self-produces.

(This is the "audiophile version" of the record - 45RPM, dual LPs, clear vinyl, lenticular coverl. Needed flattening…but good otherwise.)

nostr:npub1tr8grjna872wzjk0d6zjvq2xwnzzurhcfxdkm8d9cpm5na86ar7sdgw0wq I do always clean in a Degritter on receipt and put in a MoFi-style inner sleeve (from Vinyl Storage Solutions). I haven't generally found the need to scrub.

nostr:npub15fq7uauq4qkexje8pautd389kq2ac7c2cukwjtl8kw2n8yvdlhmqe5j8f3 nostr:npub1tr8grjna872wzjk0d6zjvq2xwnzzurhcfxdkm8d9cpm5na86ar7sdgw0wq I consider *mild* noise to be like a continuity error in a movie - if it's bothering you it's really that the movie/music/whatever isn't working.

But if the film breaks during projecting? Bad. :-)

nostr:npub15fq7uauq4qkexje8pautd389kq2ac7c2cukwjtl8kw2n8yvdlhmqe5j8f3 (Since I'm on my high horse here, I also think that if you're making a "color" album that sounds even remotely worse than a black one, don't. Either fix whatever's causing the sound problems, or press a color that works!)

nostr:npub15fq7uauq4qkexje8pautd389kq2ac7c2cukwjtl8kw2n8yvdlhmqe5j8f3 I've *generally* had pretty good luck. But there are definitely some plants - and I have no idea where these were pressed - that are doing bad work.

From what I've read, it's *hard* to press a 180g record (let along a 200g), and some plants clearly just can't do it. But in that case - hey - do a 150! A 140! Non-fill (etc) is way worse than any minor benefit of the additional weight. I have lots of "light" records that sound great.

nostr:npub1nqs84630leqsc4g8mlr4hzm0lrrl24mwzawsjm3r4wrcr3a3mmwscz4rr3 Yup. I never begrudge bands that end up landing licensing deals or hits. Everyone's gotta eat, and the music business is rough for artists...

nostr:npub1fq5n4rmpw4utt792v8fhv4cp8rmg79fyqlcdws9kxeaq5pkjwcysaep8du Cake had some excellent songs spread across a load of generally solid albums.

It's just a shame their big hits tended to be their less interesting songs.

Prolonging the Magic is great - Cool Blue Reason is worth the price of admission on its own; Hem of your Garment is a banger; Mexico is a melancholic gem.

For my money I'd say Comfort Eagle's a stronger album (more coherent), and Fashion Nugget has "Frank Sinatra" on it - but PTM is great at the heart of that trilogy.

nostr:npub1nqs84630leqsc4g8mlr4hzm0lrrl24mwzawsjm3r4wrcr3a3mmwscz4rr3 Hey, what's good is that they had some hits, so they could afford to make some more interesting songs.

One thing to note for vinyl fans - the represses of the Cake albums that were released semi-recently are sadly bad pressings (at least, the copies I bought are).

They're rife with non-fills, poorly centered, etc. Sad, but there you go.

Pat Metheny - 80/81

What a great double album. Everyone's in great form, especially DeJohnette who is all over this thing, playing up a storm. Great sound, too, in typical ECM style.

Metheny was 26 when he did this (followed by "As falls..."). Lots of info available here:
