Slowdive - 5ep

Looking forward to the new Slowdive album by going through some lesser-played L(E)Ps here.

5ep is more electronic/processed Slowdive, collecting some B-sides, etc, post-Souvlaki. As is always the case with EPs, it's short and sweet.

Hank Mobley - A Caddy for Daddy

Mobley gets together with Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw and Billy Higgins - in Rudy van Gelder's living room studio - and kicks things off with a near-R&B track, A Caddy for Daddy.

Followed up by four other more bop tracks, including the amusingly named Shorter composition "Venus Di Mildew".

The Blue Note stable was full of great players, and it's fun to see them switch roles from sideman to leader and back...

The Hives - The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons

Has it really been almost 30 years since the first Hives album?

I listen to these guys, and the Raveonettes, and start to think - maybe Scandanavia does garage rock better than we do at this point?

Somehow I'd never seen the video for Pulp's This is Hardcore, and they obviously had a great time doing a throwback neo-noir, but also kind of a 50s technicolor Douglas Sirk movie?

(It's kind of amazing what you can do with a clearly limited budget with a strong sense of style and direction.)

(Also not the first time I've seen Strange Days...plus, while disturbing, it's a movie...with a hopeful ending.)

Alas, THX's quality assurance guarantee does not extend to its own URL.

And for more Louise LeCavalier combined with a music reference - Frank Zappa's last public performance was his Yellow Shark concert, and La La La Human Steps (featuring Louise, of course) choreographed and performed during G-Spot Tornado, with Frank conducting:

In the middle of Strange Days (I had the LaserDisc and bought the DVD back in 1999 - kind of lucky, since it's impossible to find now)...and had forgotten that La La La Human Steps' Louise LeCavalier is in it.

Which made me remember that she dances with David Bowie in the Fame '90 video:

And, for more La La La Human Steps, here's a beautiful bit of Amelia featuring Mistaya Hemingway:

The Beogram is rather good overall, especially with jazz, but can have an issue with sibilance on some recordings - those always go on the Brinkmann.

If I'm really focusing on the music, it also goes on the Brinkmann... but they are both good sounding turntables.

The Dandy Warhols - The Black Album

Originally thought to be "lost" (whatever that really means), this was the Dandy's *demo* (that was rejected by the label). Well, reject it no more - they put it out later, on their web site, and it was recently repressed without the 2nd disc (Come On Feel..., available separately).

Some of these tracks were re-recorded on the 1st album. But it's fun to hear things here semi-low-fi.

Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights

For her second album, Baker went to a real studio and opened up her sound a little. The songs are beautiful but dark, dark, dark...with a little candle in the distance.

I know she's in a better place now--and IMO the most important part of boygenius--but here you just want to hand her a puppy. Maybe two puppies.

Black Coffee with Peggy Lee

Since I've already time-traveled to '59, '53 is just a skip and a hop away.

Given how "smooth" and elegant the vocal delivery and accompaniment is, this is a pretty sad album. We're not talking Sinatra's In the Wee Small Hours, exactly, but these "woman loves a bad man" tracks do make it clear it's a concept record.

Anyway - no shock, given its fame, that it's a great listen.
