I think the big relays should shut down for a few weeks to force clients and users to get more creative.

Relays could start rejecting kind 3 events with relays in the content field to help drive the necessary changes
I think so, but I think a core subset of users would vanish for a period of time whilst they figure out better relays or start running their own.

This morning I took Damus out of my relay list. Your move.
So far no major hiccup for me need more time to observe.
