This is an interesting one given the current preponderance of expensive walled garden subscription services for event management!
Meetup is free isn’t it? Or not …
Free to sign up for and use, yes. But there is a monthly charge of $15/20 for being able to organise a group. I don’t have deep understanding, as I only ever use it for free.

I am logged into Flockstr now. I guess it is looking pretty good, if they can just finish building it. Calendars seems to be the nearest equivalent of Meetup groups.
Search doesn't seem to work yet. e.g. I can see an event in Phoenix, AZ under Explore, but I can't search & find that event. Which begs the question of how I am supposed to find events near me, or have other locals find my events.
I guess it is what we have, and I will definitely keep checking back.
