Does anyone know when or how property taxes became a thing? I don't believe they paid them in early America. I'm pretty sure they were introduced sometime under the U.S. government.

It's a disease that they have exported to the rest of the world. The whole system is a complete scam where we are forced to participate in perpetuity in order to survive.
More and more the system is transitioning to a subscription model for everything.
