Many suggest to keep some signing devices unused as a security, to quickly retrieve a wallet if needed. But this type of thing really throws a wrench into that

Another advantage of DIY hardware and open software. The device has a fighting chance of staying relevant. Plus the contributers are also users. I have even made contributions to SeedSigner to expand the keyboard character set and maximum passptrade character limit.

Yes you have to enter in the seed and passphrase every time you boot the SeedSigner. The Jade has a battery tho, and the SeedSigner is just a RPi Zero that is powered by the usb port. For both devices, if entering the seed is too cumbersome, they both support SeedQR.
