A few years ago, my buddy bought a house and about a month later a house down the street exploded (propane explosion). Made national news. He had to clean the boards off the whole property. We found pieces on his roof months later.

XD Nah I think about that a lot. I have a bag I can quickly throw my hard drives (the ones holding my important backups) nearby incase the worst happens. Then it's cars.

What if all the batteries which are hooked to communication networks, were triggered to overload at one time? Surely there's a movie about that by now?
That's a legit concern with chinesium electronics hooked up to the internet.
But most systems couldn't burn down the batteries, but there are other ways systems could be damaged.
I've thought about sequestering all battery-containing devices into a metal cabinet of some sort. Would this increase safety or cause a cascade failure because of the concentration of batteries?
It depends on the chemistry involved.
And if you have that much juice, a metal cabinet might do some good, but it can't stop the combustion.
Visually inspect the cells, anything looking sus, bury it in a metal pail with a locking lid, filled with sand.
They do sell fire retardant bags for storing and charging lithium batteries.
