I've changed my mind. Having just watched the original again, and it is indeed still a masterpiece of gothic cinema, it puts the remake in a whole new, dimmer and less flattering light.

I amend my original thoughts. The new one did get 7 out of 10, now I'll give it 5, tops.

The original was such a great movie. I'm not even tempted to watch the new one.

I wanted to give it a chance and when I watched it I thought it was okay, in its own right, though it definitely didn't make me think 'wow', in hindsight.

Remakes, in general, are both unnecessary and worse than the originals. With the exception for John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), of course.
