I totally bought it at first but thanks to Pleb Undeground who were quick to point at suspicious red flags in the story, it was soon clear things were not as they seemed…
It’s one of those “possible but not plausible” stories. Smells scammy from a mile away.

I want to believe that people wouldn’t be this dishonest…but alas, they are people…
In a previous life I worked on fraud investigations. People are so much more dishonest than you’d ever think. Sadly.
