Why will debates have no effect?

As long as both candidates appear relatively competant, the confrentation between candidates only serves to assure the candidates' respective sides they stand on the right side of party lines. The opposition viewer does not see a candidate and his policies, opinions or fitness to protect liberties, but only a soldier fighting on the wrong side of the cultural war.

Lets not delude ourselves that one side or another "winning" a debate will sway people away from their ideologies. At best, it could convince people already on one side or another whether their vote will effect their daily lives and their family's future.
