Hot take: Instagram is worse than TikTok in terms of data collection.

I’ve had the following experience like 4 times:

I don’t use Instagram except to dm my brother on occasion.

I go to some restaurant or coffee shop regularly, and I find a woman working there attractive.

Instagram recommends their profile to me.

This has only ever happened on Instagram. Never on TikTok. This has happened on my degoogled pixel with location permission denied to insta, and on my iPhone.

How the fuck do they know who I have a crush on? It always puts their pages at the front of the suggested section.

even if you turn off your gps it k ows your location via cel towers.

the algo looks for business you visited and matches other people that have been there.

TBF its not that it knows you have a crush on her its just looking for business "connections" between people.

But it prob also knows youre a creep lol.

Absolutely. This is the exact reason I don't have Instagram installed on my device, even though I'm running Graphene OS. Just like you, I only use Instagram to DM some friends and family, so I use Beeper as an alternative to keeping Meta spyware on my phone.

Bluetioth also does scanning for local beacons and thus establishes your location.
