We all want a YouTube alt. Who’s gonna build it and make it not suck?
Discussion
It’s very hard to make one. Not just technically, but having good content is the biggest challenge. Creators have little to no incentive to join. Basically only the deplatformed ones might care.
you vibe code it 😂
I said we gotta take the suck out! 🤣 we don’t want me doing it lol 🤪
LOL. or why not ask Derek to do it, hehe
I have a list for him….
The app is the easy part. The media delivery, not so much.
The size of all those video files… 😱
First you use the original uploaded file but realize it's huge.
Then you transcode it down to a lower bitrate/resolution. But 2 options is still not enough so you convert it to 144p/360p/720p/1440p/2880p, at the cost of 5x the resources. Then you want to do per-title encoding to optimize the bitrate but that increases the resources used by another 3x-5x. And then you want to support new codecs like AV1 which you still need fallbacks for and where hardware acceleration is not fully available...
And you go on and on with the cost increasing rapidly. Until media hosts have a large and sustainable revenue stream to do this, which they don't, this can't happen. Except as a dumb mp4 viewer, at most.
And YouTube retains the monopoly…
It's called zapstream and it's working great
I get on there for nostr:npub14kw5ygpl6fyqagh9cnrytyaqyacg46lzkq42vz7hk8txdk49kzxs04j7y0 and that doesn’t even have anything to watch…
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like zapstream is more appointment viewing, like for live streams
I don't think it's appointment viewing but time zone viewing. Last night there was about 12 streams live simultaneously at one point. So will you find a vast variety of streams 24/7, probably not. But the site has been growing no doubt. Plus, a lot of peeps have tried out nostr streaming but most of them gave up after not making money immediately which is sad. Like most things growing a channel, any channel, requires dedication and most importantly consistency.
