Kobe beef is famous around the world, but did you know there is another label that has won more “Wagyu Olympics” (yeah that’s a thing) than Kobe beef?

Every 5 years, competitors from across Japan compete on various categories to determine who wins the Wagyu olympics. Most prefectures (out of 47 total) enter the competition and 3 winners emerge.

The meat is judged by various criteria, most of which focus on the animal itself - lineage, looks, diet, fertility. Weird, huh?

The other set of criteria focus on the meat itself - how marbled it is, fat quality.

As far as I know taste is not a criteria as that is highly subjective to each individual.

In other words, the price and the desirability of the wagyu comes in a large part from selection and production criteria in which Kobe beef is naturally more scarce due to stricter raising requirements that naturally limit the number of cattle available.

The price is not reflective of taste.

Anyway, the label that has won more Wagyu Olympics than any other? Miyazaki beef.

Similar to Kobe beef, Miyazaki beef has strict selection and breeding requirements, but consistently comes out on top in terms of meet quality.

However, due to slightly less stringent requirements to qualify for the label (lower marble quality can qualify), the meat is a bit more numerous in production. Both carry decent price tags depending on the marble quality which can range quite a bit.

And that was my useless fact of the day that you could google / wikipedia / chatgpt for yourself 😂

To me, all wagyu tastes amazing!

gm @karnage my first wish this morning is that food won’t be like a game of snakes n ladders forever.

I have a feeling when we lived more locally and pooled resources (~3,000) years ago everyone got theirs.

So today if someone with access to large amounts of aircraft , tracked and all terrain vehicles, rockets, trains and automobiles was so inclined we could feed the hungry and spread a bit of compassion n care as we go. Let’s pray we see a day in our lifetimes where we drop steak n chips nobly not bombs n chips in a wage cage. 💣

Peace ☮️

It’s not that we don’t have enough food to feed people, it’s just that distribution is difficult and many places simply don’t have good infrastructure to handle incoming food. A lot of it goes to waste before it reaches the hands that need it. The amount of global food waste is astonishing to say the least.

I’ve just seen it first hand in hospital, tonnes of waste & old folk starving because of stupid laws that’ll serve the richest providers of food the #NHS

Actually cried with a #hospital #domestic as she also suffers #foodpoverty then got really angry and almost hulked up on the spot.

We can and do have the means to redistribute, no profit in it though…..
