It’s remarkable to me that so many seem to believe that governments will stop at some “reasonable” boundary with regard to Bitcoin. If we look at other domains where privacy has been methodically eroded over the past few decades, where is the proof that Bitcoin should be any different?

They will not stop untill they have total control over our speech and freedom to transact. They never stop. This here is battle of millennia - cyber space control war. It's different from kinetic warfare so people don't get how serious it is.
The US literally requied car owners to have people holding flags walk in front of the cars. There is no limit to the level of stupidity they will sink to in the face of a new tech that threatens existing power structures.
