I love our EV, it works perfectly for us and is superior in every regard to an ICE in our opinion, I doubt we’ll ever go back now. Our tractors will be EV too once the fuel subsidies stop.
Discussion
Charge time and the ability for the vehicle to be completely controlled (including disabled) with uncontrolled centralized / proprietary software changes makes them totally inferior in my opinion. Two realities of EVs that can’t be negated.
Range is bad to terrible and extreme weather effects on EVs are also areas where they’re objectively inferior, currently.
The battery issue is another major concern. They degrade, are very expensive to replace and the rare earth metals used to make them are mined almost exclusively with slave labor. Not something I care to get involved with.
An entire motor swap on a diesel vehicle would be 5-7k and that doesn’t have any complicity in slavery. And that motor will last two or three times longer than an EV battery. My diesel also gets 650-700 miles per tank and is completely refueled in under 5 minutes. EVs just cannot compete.
Some of these issues with EVs may be remedy with time and technology evolution but some of the fatal EV flaws can’t be fixed. It’s a no from me, dawg.
Battery technology is still under heavy development so charge time and range will certainly improve and possibly outperform ICE technology in the next few years.
Modern cars have so many computers that remote disabling is possible regardless of powertrain. Hackers showed this a while ago with a Jeep in the US they took complete control of from another state via the entertainment unit.
I don't see how ICE cars are better when it comes to technical simplicity... 1000's moving parts in an engine and gearbox vs a battery and motor...
Crash safety is far superior in EV's too since the weight can be properly distributed and much lower down.
I love ICE vehicles and have developed powertrains for part of my career but there is no comparison for me between an ancient, loud, dirty technology vs an EV.
Let’s be honest modern ICE vehicles aren’t loud and pollute very minimally.
Despite the complexity of ICE vehicles a high quality diesel motor last 3 times longer than EV batteries. They’re very efficient and durable even under duress. I’ve had multiple diesel vehicles that lasted over 300k miles and were still working perfectly when I sold them and with minimal repairs.
Modern cars can be disabled with software as well but the cars I drive can’t be. They’re all pre software dependent.
Battery tech has undergone a lot of improvements and still is 25% worse than ICE ranges on average. Seems to be plateauing but jury is out on that. Charge time is the real killer for EVs. In emergencies it’s a major issue and not having access to transportation while it charges is a huge problem. EVs can’t compete here.
I’ve taken some huge road trips out to very remote areas and realize EVs can’t reliably take me on those trips too. EVs have a lot of shortcomings vs ICE and in many regards are a scam and when you look at how they’re marketed.
I choose EV’s for the same reason as I choose Bitcoin because I prefer to choose technologies that enhance my life. I used to cycle/walk/drive in London and moving amongst ICE vehicles spitting out CO2, NOx and PM was horrific. If they can solve that issue then I’m on board!
Well it does cost in other regards like the savage rare earth mines run with slave labor half way across the word…
