The goal is to maximize pleasure, we, as animals, want to weight immediate pleasure as being better in a time of uncertainty. Our lives are no longer as uncertain as those of our ancestors.

To delay instant gratification is to value the future more than the moment. It's my goal even if I don't achieve the desired outcome.
