What's the best most direct, internet based (no carrier required) text and voice based communication app for all the phones of the members of my family?

We're thinking though our emergency communications options. We want secure and private, but as usable as possible for the non techs. Open source if possible.

We've got apple and android, and potentially laptops...

Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated.
