Also surreal is people still believing that, to improve their lives, all they have to do is vote for someone, instead of putting in the work themselves to ensure that tomorrow they are better than today.

Don't hope... verify! When people are providing this kind with the legitimacy for them to rule, the worse should always be expectaded. We hold the power over our lives and over ourselves. Understanding this as fundamental is key.
